starts right now. this is ktvu channel 2 news at 5:00. >>> good evening and thanks for joining us for this special late edition of ktvu channel 2 news at 6:00 i'm jane katsuyama in for heather holmes. >> i'm ken wayne. a series of powerful storms slams the bay area. we're on storm watch with team coverage and we begin with ken pritchett with how wind affected people's plans today. >> reporter: ken, about half an hour ago it was a foggy drive over the bay bridge. right now it's as clear as it can be and that is how quickly things have changed. earlier this afternoon wind advisories for bay area bridges and the windiest we found was this morning in pacifica. with winds this strong, and waves this high, there was little doubt that the pacifica pier would be closed. >> i think the mayan apocalypse is running a few days late. >> reporter: we're told that the waves crashed he over the pier. >> it's so windy. >> elsewhere this storm led to localized flooding in scattered parts of the bay area. despite the mess, the constant rain, and wind, people braved the storm in union square. >> the flag

our commute, coming up at noon. . >>> this is ktvu channel 2 news at noon. >>> they are concerned about a levee at a bay area creek. the bay area is getting a one day break from the rains this christmas eve and we are looking at flood fears and power problems, and as we look live out over the bay it is pretty outside but there are left over issues related to the storms. we begin with developing news, a water-main break is causing some headaches in marin county. alex savage has the latest details on whether it is causing any traffic problems, good afternoon alex. >> reporter: the water has been shut off where that water-main broke. this was a 12-inch line which burst this morning and the pressure from underground pushed up the roadway and they tell me for a time there was a threat of a sinkhole. the broken main sent water rushing down bell lane. it happened at 9:30 a.m. in an unincorporated valley known as cam valley. police urged people to move their cars off the street with the concern being the roadway may cave in. i spoke with them and they said all of that rushing water was do

monitor the situation. we're live in green brain -- greenbrae this morning, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, alex. >>> rising creek waters flooded roadways an temporarily closed highway 101. it happened on the peninsula in a creek that overflowed its banks. janine de la vega is live at the creek to show us some of the damage. >> reporter: well, we're right here on the border of palo alto and east palo alto. this is highway 101 and the creek flows right underneath it and the water was so high last night that it was flashing up over and onto the freeway. this is video of that same area of what it looked like last night. water was flooding on 101, north of the embarcadero. the highway patrol was helping motorists with traffic breaks. the creek crested at university avenue and woodland. the water spilled over and into the entrance of the four seasons hotel. fire officials say even though there was not massive damage, they remain worried about the creek. >> we need to work on these holes in this levy. can't leave it like this especially since we're early in the winter and this
